Today, Goldmaster has released a new YouTube video that details how to scan CDs, including the covers and packaging, and upload the scans to MusicBrainz.
Goldmaster has often advocated for buying physical media or purchasing digital content from platforms like Bandcamp or Beatport. There are several reasons for this: when users stream content from platforms like Spotify, they don’t own any of the content. As a result, albums and singles often disappear and are lost to time. By purchasing tracks, users not only support the artists more significantly, but they also own a copy that can be listened to offline and on any device.
As more content becomes streaming or digital-only, there is a growing concern that many CDs, including rare designs, covers, and CD art, could be lost to time due to wear and tear or lack of knowledge in keeping them safe. There are already many rare CDs with little uploaded cover art or packaging scans, some of which could be sitting in someone’s collection waiting to be appreciated.
As part of creating the video guide, Goldmaster has put together a DJ mix using only music that is copyright-free and released on the UK-based label, No Copyright Sounds, often shortened to NCS.
No Copyright Sounds is a British music label that Goldmaster wanted to help support as part of the “Buy from Europe” movement. The journey of putting the tracks together involved a discovery phase where tracks were selected not only for their quality but also because they are free to download and use, provided they are credited. All the tracks used in the mix are credited on the MusicBrainz page.
The DJ mix is available free to download and can be used in other video projects such as video guides and tutorials. It is in WAV format and, as such, is well-suited for professional film editing due to WAV being an uncompressed format that has not been edited in any way.
